Victor Ortiz on McGregor vs. Mayweather: It’s like comparing ‘ping pong’ to ‘tennis’

0

Boxer Victor Ortiz doesn’t think the Mayweather-McGregor fight makes any sense.

Conor McGregor might be one of the best boxers in the UFC, finishing almost all of his fights via knockout, but the lightweight champion has never stepped foot in the boxing ring on the world’s stage.

In fact, ‘The Notorious’ has never stepped foot in the boxing ring for a professional fight, which is why many pundits have concluded that the Irishman stands no chance against pound-for-pound boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. on August 26.

McGregor and Mayweather are set to square off in a 12-round boxing match, but former WBC welterweight champ Victor Ortiz doesn’t understand why the fight was booked in the first place.

Ortiz, who was knocked out by ‘Money’ in controversial fashion at MGM’s Grand Garden Arena in 2011, likened MMA and boxing to ping pong and tennis.

“I’ll just put it this way: you put the tennis champion against the ping pong champion, and they square it off,” Ortiz told Fight Hub TV in a recent interview. “Doesn’t make sense. They both have courts, they both have rackets, they both use balls, but they’re two different sports.”

Several other figures within the combat sports world have made similar comparisons, but oddsmakers list Mayweather as less of a betting favorite with each passing day. Mayweather opened as a massive -2500 favorite, but as the bout inches closer to reality, McGregor has tightened the gap and is now sitting as a +425 underdog.

The boxing extravaganza takes place on August 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
