San Jose Sharks draft picks since 2023 have (mostly) something in common
The San Jose Sharks made nine selections at the 2025 NHL Draft at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. They did not trade up or down during the two-day event.
Every player the Sharks selected, but one, was listed at 6 feet or taller. The Sharks didn’t take anyone listed at 5-11 or shorter last year and 2023, the only two players the Sharks took who were listed as being under 6-feet tall were 5-9 defenseman Luca Cagnoni (123rd overall, fourth round) and 5-11 defenseman Eric Polhkamp (132nd overall, fifth round).
It’s a departure from the 2020 draft, in which only two of the nine players the Sharks drafted were taller than 5-foot-11 — 6-foot-4 forward Brandon Coe in the fourth round and 6-foot winger Timofey Spitserov in the seventh round.
This year, no defenseman under 6-0 was drafted.
“You look at the trend around the NHL now, especially in this draft, there’s a lot of big boys that were taken, and they’re all big kids that can skate,” said Chris Morehouse, the Sharks’ director of amateur scouting, on Saturday. “You’re obviously trying to pay attention to trends and where things are going, but you also have to be able to play hockey, and you also have to be a good player, and you also have to do things.”
