UFC Atlanta medical suspensions: 3 fighters get indefinite suspensions including Miranda Maverick
A total of three fighters are facing indefinite medical suspensions after UFC Atlanta this past Saturday night.
On Tuesday, the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission confirmed the medical suspensions handed down from the card in Atlanta, which included Miranda Maverick receiving an indefinite layoff after she revealed that she suffered a torn ACL in her knee during the fight against Rose Namajunas.
Following the event, Maverick explained how the injury actually happened in the second round but her knee buckled and gave out during an exchange in the third when Namajunas was credited with a knockdown.
“I never got dropped, but I was unstable on my legs so as soon as I got hit in the third round my leg buckled,” Maverick said on Instagram. “I’m blessed I was able to make it to the end of the fight and I’m honored that I got to share the cage with the legend Rose Namajunas.”
Typically, ACL injuries like this one require surgery and Maverick is probably looking at a year out of action after she recovers. As a result, she was suspended indefinitely, which means she needs to get a doctor’s clearance before competing again.
The same goes Edmen Shahbazyan, who received an indefinite suspension or up to 180 days unless he’s cleared by a doctor. The commission didn’t reveal the nature of the potential injury but Shahbazyan has to receive clearance before he’s allowed to compete again.
Alonzo Menifield was the third fighter to receive that same indefinite suspension or up to 180 days after his hard-fought victory over Oumar Sy on the main card.
