11 electric WNBA Finals photos from Game 1’s improbable Lynx win

Game 1 of the WNBA Finals was an INSTANT CLASSIC that was so ridiculous I’m STILL trying to wrap my brain around it.

The Liberty were up big ― as high as 18 points ― and had firm control of the matchup. Every time the Minnesota Lynx got close to breaking the game wide open, New York returned with more buckets until its defense had no answer for the late-game barrage of shots Minnesota made. With less than five minutes remaining, the Lynx erased a 15-point lead, and Courtney Williams made a GNARLY 4-point play to put Minnesota out in front.

Both teams then furiously scrambled to win in regulation. However, a missed free throw by Breanna Stewart sent the game to overtime, and the Liberty eventually lost to the Lynx. Unfortunately, the team didn’t have enough to finish. Stewie also missed a late-game layup as time expired, which would have sent the game into double overtime. WHEW.
