Across the country, devotees enthusiastically celebrate Janmashtami, a festival honouring the birth of Lord Krishna. The festival features the dahi handi ritual, during which young people, affectionately called Govindas, dress in bright-coloured clothing and come together to form a human pyramid. They then climb to reach an earthen pot hanging in the air, which is filled with buttermilk. The pot must be broken, symbolizing the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth.
