Bears Add Another Intriguing Receiver To Justin Fields’ Arsenal

The Chicago Bears know they have work to do before they can be anywhere close to satisfied with the receiving corps around Justin Fields. Adding Byron Pringle in free agency was a decent start, but he and Darnell Mooney don’t feel like a strong enough combination. There are also serious depth questions behind them, with Equanimeous St. Brown and Dazz Newsome being the two best options. So GM Ryan Poles decided to make another move.

Sticking to a bargain-hunting approach, the Bears opted to sign veteran David Moore after a tryout with the team at the start of voluntary minicamps. A former 7th round pick in 2017, he became a quality rotational receiver for the Seattle Seahawks between 2018 and 2020. Across 46 games, he made 78 catches for 1,163 yards and 13 touchdowns. His last season there was arguably his best, but it wasn’t enough to convince the Seahawks to keep him. So he spent 2021 bouncing between Denver and Green Bay.

Now he’s hoping for a fresh opportunity in Chicago.

Make no mistake. Moore isn’t expected to move the needle too much in the passing game. He’s a capable #4 or #3 option at best. Somebody good for a big catch from time to time based on some of his highlights from Seattle. Then again, it did look like he was improving each year there. Sadly the Seahawks had Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf in place by then. There are no such obstacles in Chicago.

Justin Fields is already working on his chemistry with Pringle. Moore may not have long to get acclimated because the Bears are almost guaranteed to draft receiving help next week. It should be quite a competition when training camp begins this summer. Poles made it clear he’s hunting for that reliable target Fields can look to when needed. A not-so-subtle indication he feels the Bears don’t have one yet.
