Ex-QPR owner left without Glorious Goodwood trophy after mystery mix-up following £170,000 win

WONDERFUL TONIGHT’S owner Chris Wright was left empty-handed despite her impressive win in the Lillie Langtry Stakes on Saturday.

His star filly waltzed home in the Group 2 on the final day of Glorious Goodwood but was unable to celebrate with the trophy.

The prize was instead given to the owners of Stewards’ Cup hero Commanche Falls.

And as Wright went to leave Goodwood before a celebratory party following Wonderful Tonight’s £170,000 win, it all unravelled.

The music mogul was told someone had already collected the trophy to his surprise.

And it was only when Commanche Falls co-owner Ian Davison who discovered the mishap when opening the box later that evening.

Wright revealed on Twitter late on Saturday: “Wonderful day at Glorious Goodwood today with the magnificent win by Wonderful Tonight in the Lily Langtree, somewhat spoiled by the fact that someone with the name Davidson actually went into the weighing room and took our trophy!

“Yes, officially signed for it, and was given it!”

Wright was quickly told by ITV’s main man Ed Chamberlin that the mix-up may have resulted in Davison being handed the Lillie Langtry trophy instead of the Stewards’ Cup.

Wright replied: “Ah! This must explain the mystery of the missing trophy! Thanks Ed for solving the puzzle.

“I’m sure Ian Davidson would rather have the Stewards Cup that he won, so we can arrange for both trophies to be in the rightful homes!”

Goodwood have since been in touch with both owners to apologise and arrange for the correct trophies to be handed out.

Wright’s horse Wonderful Tonight could run in France next before a likely tilt at the Arc in October.

David Menuisier’s horse is a general 8-1 for that race.
