McGregor was pulled out of the fight and underwent surgery to repair the damage.

The 33-year-old posted a lengthy video on Instagram today riding a mobility scooter around California while sharing some thoughts.

And he revealed what happened to his leg that caused it to break in the Octagon at UFC 264.

McGregor said: “I was injured going into the fight. People have been asking me ‘when was the leg broke?’.

“Ask Dana White, ask the UFC, ask UFC head doctor Dr Jeff Davidson – they knew I had stress fractures in my leg going into that cage.

“We were debating pulling out because I was sparring with no shinpads and kicked a knee a few times, so I had multiple stress fractures in the leg.

“And then I had trouble with the ankle anyway over the years from fighting all the time. I was wrapping my ankle every training session. Even when it was sore, I wouldn’t stop training.”

McGregor added: “I needed to get treatment on my leg and I would’ve never committed to going under the knife unless something like this happened.

“I’m getting exactly what I needed and what I needed was a titanium shinbone. Now it’s unbreakable – I’m like Arnie in Terminator 2.”

The Irish fighter revealed on Sunday night that his surgery went extremely well and he was on the road to recovery.

He is staying in a new apartment close to his doctor and riding a mobility scooter while his leg heals.

But McGregor opened up even further in his video today – explaining how the last few days had been an emotional rollorcoaster.

He said: “I had a couple ups and downs the last couple days. I had a great birthday the other day and appreciate all the birthday messages you sent me.

“I came out of surgery and was feeling euphoric that the job was done.

“I thought this (recovery) was going to be easy and then I hit a wall.

“I was in a lot of pain and I’m going to be like this for a while. So I went into a rut after that.”

The 33-year-old added: “I know there’s going to be ups and downs on this journey I’m on. But I’m aware of it now and motivated to keep going.

“I’m going to bring the family out in a couple days and see my kids again. I’ve got a great team behind me and supporting me.

“I’m extremely grateful for every single one of you.”
