Hey kids, do the Oakland A’s have a deal for you!

Hey kids, do the Oakland A’s have a deal for you!

The A’s may not know how to beat the Giants, but you can’t beat their resourcefulness in coercing fans to the ballpark. For instance, their latest promotion allows kids to attend games at the Coliseum in September for free.

The team announced Monday kids ages 12 and younger will be admitted to its final 12 regular season home games at no cost. The catch? Kids must be accompanied by a paying adult, who can then get up to two free tickets to be used by children.

“We invite all families to bring their kids to the ballpark in September to experience the electric atmosphere of the Coliseum as we look to clinch our second consecutive Postseason berth,” said A’s chief operating officer Chris Giles. “Twelve games for kids 12 and younger for free.”

Not a bad move for a team that’s already tried mightily to enhance the fan experience this season by offering flexible and inexpensive season ticket plans. And, as Raiders owner Mark Davis will begrudgingly tell you, the A’s already added new fan-friendly (and Raider-unfriendly) sections such as the Stomping Zone for kids outside the Eastside Club, Hero Deck in right field, Oak Landing in left field, Lounge Seats, and The Terrace behind the dugouts, as well as Coppola Theater Boxes behind the plate.

It’s actually the second straight season the A’s have opened their doors and let kids 12 and under in for free. Last season, the A’s allowed a paying adult to bring in up to two kids for free from June through August.

(Despite what one of our newsroom colleagues suggested, we don’t believe the A’s extended this latest offer as a mea culpa for their role in MLB’s Players Weekend, which featured some of the more hideous-looking uniforms in recent memory).

While the A’s push toward another postseason berth certainly holds intrigue, kids may be even more attracted by the three bobblehead days (Campy Campaneris, Sept. 8; Mike Fiers, Sept. 20; Ramon Laureano, Sept. 22) and two fireworks shows (Sept. 7 and Sept. 21) remaining on the A’s schedule.

Yet, it’s unlikely the A’s duplicate their success at the gate this past weekend when just over 100,000 watched their two games against the Giants. Before those two crowds showed up, the A’s were only averaging 52 more fans per game at the Coliseum than last season, when they drew an average of 19,427 fans.

This past weekend’s surge at the turnstiles boosted the A’s average attendance from 19,479 to 20,374, which is still only better than eight of baseball’s 30 teams.
