Seventeen area teams listed among sport's state rankings

The first set of state rankings came out Tuesday and 17 area squads were listed among the five classifications — including top-five selections Colonie (Class AA), Greenwich (Class C) and Salem (Class D).

Shenendehowa senior shortstop Nicole McCarvill (.590 batting average), headed to Stony Brook, has spent more time of late pitching for the Plainsmen.

Isabelle DeChiaro, Cohoes: A tough choice between a pair of Class B stars in DeChiaro, a University at Albany commit, and Ichabod Crane junior pitcher Calista Phippen.

The combination of pitching prowess and hitting exploits lands the spot for DeChiaro.

The Garnet Raiders (11-1), ranked No. 4 in the Class AA state poll, split two games with Section I power John Jay and have won all of their Suburban Council contests.

Nicole McCarvill delivered a two-run home run, walked three times and tossed a seven-hitter with five strikeouts in this road win.

Cohoes 5, Ichabod Crane 4 (10 innings): These two Class B title contenders opened the spring break week with a Colonial Council contest at Cohoes decided via the International tie-breaking rule.
