U-23 Men's Softball World Cup opens in Sincelejo before 10,000 fans at Estadio 20 de Enero

The WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026 officially got underway in Sincelejo with a vibrant and memorable opening ceremony that drew a crowd of approximately 10,000 spectators to the Estadio 20 de Enero.

The stands were filled to capacity as fans gathered to witness the start of the tournament, creating an electric atmosphere that reflected the city’s enthusiasm for international softball. The ceremony combined sport and culture, showcasing the rich traditions of the region.

WBSC Executive Vice President Softball Craig Cress formally declared the tournament open, marking the beginning of what promises to be a highly competitive event.

"Men’s softball continues to demonstrate its global reach, with strong development across all continents. Events like this reaffirm not only the competitive excellence of our sport, but also its ability to unite cultures and communities through a shared passion," said Cress.

"This World Cup is another important milestone in the continued growth of softball in the Americas and globally. Colombia has a strong tradition in our sport, and hosting an event of this level reflects both that history and the opportunities ahead for further development," he expressed.

The celebration featured traditional Colombian dances, with performers bringing colour and energy to the field, offering attendees a glimpse into the cultural heritage of Sincelejo and the surrounding region. The artistic displays were met with strong applause from the crowd.

The evening concluded with a spectacular fireworks display that lit up the sky above the stadium, providing a fitting finale to the ceremony and setting the tone for the days of competition ahead.
