Sports briefs: Redwood softball team walks off with a win
Gia Meyers hit a two-run walk-off home run to lift the Redwood High softball team to a 7-6 victory against Bishop O’Dowd on Friday.
Ava Brown led off the inning with a single then Meyers hit a live drive over the center-field wall to win the game. Meyers had two hits and drove in a game-high four runs for the Giants (1-0).
Brown, Elle McElreath, and Kait Christensen all had two hits apiece for Redwood. Stella Belluomini drove in two runs at the plate and pitched a complete game. Belluomini allowed nine hits but only one earned run while striking out four.
- Leadoff hitter Georgiana Castro had two hits and drove in four runs to lead Novato to an 18-11 victory against Windsor on Friday. Seanna Madsen added three hits and two RBIs for the Hornets (1-0). Jocelyn Conrado had four hits and two RBIs. Sofia Long was credited with four RBIs. Novato scored eight runs in a big first inning and led 14-4 after four innings.
Girls wrestling
San Marin’s Catania DeKeyrel (155 pounds) kept her medal hopes alive with a consolation round win Friday over seventh-seeded Laiyah Aguilar of Fountain Valley at the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield. Action in the tournament concludes on Saturday.
Prep baseball
Redwood (1-0-1) rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth inning in what ultimately went down as a 4-4 tie in seven innings against Acalanes on Friday.
Noah Gersch and Maxim Wells led off the inning with singles then both came around to score after Acalanes committed an error on a ball hit by Ethan Ferry to make it 4-2.
Redwood’s next two baserunners came around to score on a combination of two wild pitchers and a passed ball during Landon Brunk’s at-bat. Wells (three hits) and Gersch combined for five of Redwood’s six hits on the day.
- Tam fell behind by six runs through the first five innings but made a spirited rally with three runs in the sixth inning of a 6-3 home loss to Petaluma on Friday. Alex Radics led the way with two hits and an RBI for Tam (1-1), which brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Boys volleyball
Tam took the last two sets to prevail against San Rafael, 25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19 on Friday. The Bulldogs were led by Mason Stein’s 16 kills and 13 from Rowen Saunders. Leo Datnow had 19 digs and Jason Chang had 28 assists.
Boys tennis
Alex Christfort and Rowan Croft picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to pace San Marin to a 6-1 win over Marin Catholic that included two defaults at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. The top three singles matches all went to super tiebreakers, with Charlie Miller taking the win for MC at No. 1 singles.
- Fernando Ruiz won his second super tiebreaker of the week, winning at No. 3 singles to help Terra Linda to a 7-0 victory against San Rafael on Friday. Bhuvan Medidi and En-Yu Liu won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Eswin Lopez had the other singles win for TL.
- The match between Novato and Archie Williams got postponed until next week, the exact day still to be determined. The rescheduled match will be played at Novato High and the second MCAL match between the two schools will be moved to Archie Williams.
