Yumei Keong: Singapore didn't showcase their best softball in WBSC U-15 Women's Softball World Cup 2025

Singapore head coach Yumei Keong said before the WBSC U-15 Women's Softball World Cup 2025 that her goal was to win at least one game. It hasn't happened.

"We expected the standard of some of the better teams, but it's been a little disappointing," commented Keong. "My girls did not bring their best softball into the tournament. We have a few more games to go, hopefully we will do better."

Singapore will start the Super Round with a 0-2 record. What's your overall goal in the second part of the tournament?
"We are not looking too far ahead. I want the girls to concentrate on one game at a time, one pitch at a time. I want the girls to play up to their ability and show their best softball."

Singapore's head coach believes the team has a lot to improve to compete in the Placement Round.
"Our pitching needs to be more stable and consistent. We are giving away too many walks. We also need to make better choices at the plate, be a bit more aggressive when good pitches come."

Which team impressed you the most?
"I have a standard answer for you. The United States are an eye-opener. They are so aggressive…it looks like their best defence is their offence. You can learn a lot watching them."

Keong still believes the participation in the U-15 Women's Softball World Cup will boost softball development in Singapore.
"The girls who participated can bring their experience back to their teammates back home. I think they can share what they have learned in clubs and schools in Singapore. I am sure this will help us improve. And step up the ladder."

Shortstop Sonya Van der Beek evaluated her experience in a conversation with the WBSC.
"I think it was exciting. It was the first time I played in a World Cup."

"The level of play was high," she added. "The pitchers are a lot faster, compared to what we see in Singapore, and it's been pretty hard to adjust."

On a final note, Van der Beek spoke about her life in softball.
"I started playing softball at 10 and still play in school. I hope to continue playing in the future."
