Sports Briefs: Archie Williams softball claws out playoff win
Kennedy Dunsing provided the go-ahead hit as the No. 10 Archie Williams High softball team posted a 3-2 victory at No. 7 College Park in the North Coast Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday.
Dunsing’s RBI – her second of the game – scored Paige Murphy, who led off the sixth inning with a triple.
Murphy, also the team’s starting pitcher, shut the door from there, capping off a complete-game six-hitter. Murphy allowed one earned run and struck out six.
The Peregrine Falcons (19-8), who advance to face No. 2 Carondelet (13-12) for a quarterfinal at 5 p.m. Friday, also got two hits from Parker Conrad and an RBI from Sam Singer.
- Leah Cronin had two hits and Taylor Testa escaped a jam in the bottom of the seventh as San Marin held on for a 4-3 victory against No. 8 Vintage in the NCS D-I playoffs on Tuesday night. Testa recorded the final out for San Marin (19-6) with runners on second and third. San Marin advances to face No. 1 Liberty (20-4) on Friday. - Ava Brown had Redwood’s lone hit of the game as the Giants fell 9-0 against Newark Memorial in the NCS D-II playoffs Tuesday. Brown, who singled in the third inning, also drew two walks for No. 9 Redwood (15-11). No. 8 Newark Memorial (18-4) scored four times in the third inning and pulled away gradually from there.
- Terra Linda, looking to snap a lengthy losing skid, jumped out to a seven-run lead on Tuesday but couldn’t hold it, falling 12-11 at home against No. 10 Healdsburg (14-12) in the NCS D-V playoffs. Liv Offenbach and Ava Lawhad two RBIs each as TL built up an 8-1 lead in the third inning. TL only gave up four hits but committed seven errors and issued 10 walks. Eleanor Johnson reached base five times (triple, single, three walks) for No. 7 TL (8-15). Katie Malas had two hits.
Prep baseball
A walkoff double by junior Walker Untermann gave No. 6 Marin Catholic a 7-6 victory over No. 11 Analy (17-9) to kick off the North Coast Section Division III playoffs Tuesday in Sebastopol. Marin Catholic (13-12) advances to play No. 14 Kelseyville.
Untermann’s shot to centerfield scored junior James Stocker from second for the winning run. Stocker, who scored twice Tuesday, was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Sophomore Johnny Greco was 2-for-4 with a double and a run for the Wildcats, who scored four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at six runs each.
Carson Davis who threw five innings, registered three strikes and allowed one run. At the plate, Davis had two hits and Cooper Mitchell doubled and scored twice.
- A late three-run rally by De Anza ended seventh-seeded Branson’s postseason run early as the No. 10 Dons (6-15-1) beat the host Bulls, 3-1, in Tuesday’s first-round North Coast Section Division V baseball contest at College of Marin. Jonah Bordon brought Treyvor Mathews around to score in the fifth inning as the Bulls (9-16) broke through the stalemate first. But a big hit in the sixth inning from the Dons’ Jason Miles scored two runs, and he scored for a 3-1 De Anza lead. Cobe Benjamin was 2-for-3 with a triple for the Bulls. Branson ace Mo Jacoby rang up six strikeouts and held De Anza to three hits in seven innings.
- Host Redwood High fell into a deep hole in the first inning and was unable to rally out during a 9-5 loss to No. 6 Benicia (17-8) in Tuesday’s opening round of the NCS D-I playoffs. Miles Harrison and Theo Trono had two hits each for the No. 11 Giants (18-9-1), while Sam Gersch drove in a pair of runs. The full story can be found online and will run in Thursday’s print.
- A home run from sophomore Solly Ojalvo helped ignite a fast start for Archie Williams High, but the No. 15 Peregrine Falcons saw their big lead erased late in Tuesday’s 7-6 loss to No. 2 Piedmont (16-9) in the NCS D-III opening round. Archie Williams (12-13) took a 6-0 lead in the first two innings, but Piedmont rallied and eventually took the lead with a two-run fifth inning. Falcons senior Jack Evans was 2-for-3 with a double and pair of runs, while senior Arlo Murphy doubled, drove in two runs and scored a run. Ojalvo had two RBIs. Falcons pitchers Leo Hendricks and Logan Burke combined for 11 strikeouts.
- San Rafael broke up the shutout with a run in the seventh inning, but couldn’t put together a rally in Tuesday’s 9-1 loss to No. 4 El Cerrito (20-7) in the opening round of the NCS-D-III bracket. Sebastian Chick plated Cruz Wexler for the No. 13 Bulldogs’ only run. Gio Brovelli provided the lone hit for San Rafael (13-14).
College football
Former San Marin High standout Lars Rau announced via social media on Monday that he’s transferring from Texas State to the University of Illinois.
Rau, a kicker/punter, had 24 punts for 870 yards for Texas State last season. Rau was an all-MCAL first-team selection as both a kicker and a punter for San Marin.
Hall of Fame
The inaugural Tam High Athletics Hall of Fame has set a date of Oct. 11 at the Tamalpais Valley Community Center. Applications for athletes, coaches and teams at least 10 years removed from graduation are still being accepted at tamhighboosters.com, or email tamalpaishof@gmail.com.
