Sports briefs: San Rafael, Redwood win to create traffic jam atop MCAL softball standings

Sophia Everett and Thomara Drummer had big games for the San Rafael High softball team in a win against Archie Williams while Redwood rolled to a big win — results that left all three teams in a tie for first place atop the MCAL standings on Wednesday.

Everett had three hits, two RBIs, and scored four times as San Rafael cruised to a 9-1 win against the Peregrine Falcons. Drummer and Angel Amesa had back-to-back doubles for the Bulldogs (15-2, 8-2) in a four-run third inning.

Drummer helped her own cause with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Drummer pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out 13.

Archie Williams (10-4, 8-2) scored its lone run in the top of the fourth — a homer by catcher Kennedy Dunsing.

In the other game, Redwood scored early and often to take down Tam 14-0 in five innings. The Giants (11-5, 8-2) got three hits apiece from Hailey Carlton and Elle McElreath. Gia Meyers had two hits and Addy Dunn had two RBIs.

Eden Clark had two hits to pace the Red-tailed Hawks (3-12, 1-9).

All three first-place teams have four games left and have split the season series against each other to this point. The only head-to-head meeting left on the schedule sees Redwood travel to San Rafael on April 29. The Bulldogs won the first game, 4-3, in Larkspur.

Prep baseball

Sophomore Jack Moseley homered to highlight Wednesday’s 13-6 non-league win over Montgomery. Moseley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Theo Trono doubled and singled to drive in three runs and scored twice. Lucas Ghio was 3-for-3 and Rex Solle was 2-for-5. On the mound, Redwood senior Chas Veley struck out five batters through three innings.

Girls lacrosse

Tam netted a 15-5 non-league win over University on Wednesday. The Red-tailed Hawks and San Marin, both 5-2, are scheduled to play Thursday in a match that will decide the third-place finisher in the MCAL.

Boys tennis

San Domenico swept International, 5-0, with singles wins from Toby Sadzeck, Gavin Kennedy and Parker Sadzeck.

Boys golf

San Marin 216 (Noah Duncan’s 40 at Indian Valley Golf Course led San Marin past San Rafael, 216-227, on Wednesday. Kai Payne shot a 41 for the Bulldogs.

Women’s golf

Dominican University finished sixth Wednesday at the PacWest Golf Championships after battling through illness and tough winds at Mauna Lani North Course. The Penguins’ Claire Shubin bounced back from a rough start in the final round of the tournament, recording three birdies and four pars on the back nine to finish with a 77 and finish fifth on the individual board at 12 over par.

Women’s tennis

Dominican University swept Metro State 4-0 Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the PacWest Tennis Championships at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Arizona. The Penguins’ Audrey Rafols took a 6-4, 6-3 win over Emily Hefner at No. 1 singles to clinch the match. Carolina Guerrero and Astrid Craig also won singles matches for Dominican.

Prep swimming

Terra Linda’s Jamie Schmidt won two events as the Trojans narrowly edged the Marin Catholic girls, 89-87, Tuesday. Schmidt won the 200 IM (2:25.40) and 100 breast (1:18.32). Marin Catholic’s Alyssa Kooy won the 100 free (57.83), but the Trojans had three top five placers in the event to pick up valuable points. Kooy also won the 50 free (25.60) and the Wildcats’ Esme Quay won the 200 free (2:02.22) and the 100 back (1:06.60).

In the boys contest, Terra Linda outpaced Marin Catholic, 132-32, with a trio of double winners. Ben Butler won the 200 free (1:43.65) and the 100 back (54.51), while Nicholas Arinduque was first in the 100 fly (55.41) and 100 breast (1:01.33). Jack Middleton took first in the 50 free (22.27) and 100 free (49.07).

Boys volleyball

Archie Williams survived a 3-1 test against Marin Catholic with a 29-27, 25-13, 21-25, 25-15 win on Tuesday. In other games, Tam swept San Marin, 25-14, 25-16, 25-15, and Terra Linda shut out Novato, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19.
