College baseball

Senior catcher Dawsen Bacho was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday morning after helping Sacramento State to its third consecutive league series victory last weekend at home.

The honor is the first of Bacho’s career and the second Hornet to be honored by the conference office this season after freshman teammate Colin Hunter was named the WAC’s pitcher of the week back on Feb. 21. The last Sacramento State student-athlete to earn top hitter honors from the conference office was Matt Smith, who won it twice (March 15 and May 10) in 2021.

Bacho recorded multiple hits in all three games of his team’s series against Seattle U, batting .538 (7-for-13) for the week with a .625 on base percentage and a 1.077 slugging percentage after clubbing a double and a pair of home runs. The Novato native scored six runs and drove in seven while also walking three times.

He opened his weekend with a 2-for-4 performance as part of a 15-5 eight-inning win over the Redhawks, walking twice, driving in a run, and scoring three times. He finished with three hits in a losing effort in the second half of a doubleheader, but bounced back in a big way in the series finale, hitting a pair of home runs and driving in six as part of a 7-5 victory to close out the series.

College football

San Jose State University graduate student Jack Snyder has been named to the 2022 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society, as announced by the NFF and the College Hall of Fame. Snyder, an offensive lineman from Mill Valley, is the 18th Spartan to join such a prestigious club.

Snyder, a there-time all conference selection, was an All-Mountain West second team pick in 2021. He set school career records for games played (57) and games started (52).

“As the National Football Foundation celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2022, we are pleased to honor another impressive group of athletes as part of this year’s Hampshire Honor Society,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “Over the last 16 years, the Hampshire Honor Society has served as a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives.”

Only 1,559 football players from over 300 schools were awarded this season and you had to maintain a 3.2 GPA while also seeing significant playing time during the 2021 season and have completed their final year of eligibility.

Motor Sports

This weekend started off with a podium finish for Kevin Buckler’s The Racer’s Group, with Jason Alexandridis, also of Novato, and Derek DeBoer co-driving to third in the TRG No. 66 TRG Rebounderz/Trace3 Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport in Saturday’s opening round of the Pirelli GT4 America Series.

Their second race Sunday as part of the SRO Fanatec GT World Challenge America weekend at Sonoma Raceway looked as promising but ended in heartbreak. Between them, DeBoer and Alexandridis passed 19 cars in the 39-car field, with Alexandridis passing for fourth in AM class with less than two minutes to go.

On the final lap Alexandridis took third, on his way to a second podium and sharing the points lead with DeBoer. Each day they had passed at least 17 cars, eight for position in class. But an over-ambitious move by Elias Sabo, two cars behind Alexandridis into the final chicane, Turns 9 and 9A, punted the TRG Porsche into instant retirement. The impact sheered the right front wheel, costing them nine positions since they were unable to complete the final lap.

“Apparently he went through the dirt and went airborne, he was airborne when he hit me,” Alexandridis said. “I’m looking left, having no idea what’s about to happen. I was so happy with how it was going.”

He took the perspective of thinking how well 99.8 percent of his weekend went.

“I’m coming home with a great smile on my face,” he said. “I had a great time with my family.”

• In the highest profile win of his career at age 51, Tiburon’s Memo Gidley co-drove the GTE class-winning Rinaldi Racing Ferrari 488 GTE EVO in the European Le Mans Series season opener at Le Castellet, France Sunday. After four hours of racing, co-driver Nicolas Varrone held on to win by .12 of a second — about two feet.

Gidley had earned pole position in the No. 32 Ehret Family Vineyards Ferrari and Gidley, Pierre Ehret, and Varrone were at or near the front throughout. This was officially a one-off drive for Gidley, but that status could change.
