[Softball] No. 8 Lions Sweep Hawks in GSAC Opener
COSTA MESA, Calif. – To open up GSAC play, the SDCC softball team started off with their toughest test.
The No. 8 Vanguard Lions proved their worthiness of the high ranking as they defeated the Hawks 10-1 in Game 1 and 6-3 in Game 2.
SDCC drops to 6-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
In Game 1, it was the Hawks that got on the board first. Hannah Springs started the game with a single to center followed by a single from Alicia Corona. With runners on the corners, Noemi Farfan hit a sac fly to right field to score Springs from third.
That was the only run for the Hawks in the game as the Lions scored 10-unanswered in the next five innings for the win. SDCC was held to three hits.
In Game 2, the Lions were the ones to strike first. VU scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hawks were held scoreless until the fifth inning.
Corona reached on an error that scored Springs and Lisette Mejias for their first runs. Farfan then singled to score Kayla Dominguez as the Hawks cut their deficit to 5-3.
The Lions added a run in the bottom of the sixth to cap all scoring.
These two teams will be back on the field on Saturday for another DH. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, there will be no fans allowed inside the complex.
