MSWC Day 2: 14 teams begin the battle For The Title of World Champion
The WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship starts today for 14 National Teams, after New Zealand’s victory over host Czech Republic last night on opening day.
Venezuela 1-0 South Africa
Group A opened today at Svoboda Park in Prague. Venezuela defeated South Africa, 1-0, in a pitching duel during the first game of the day. Herwin Querales scored the only run of the game, while Erik Urbaneja pitched a complete game shutout.
Urbaneja claimed his first win of the tournament with a masterpiece. The Venezuelan left-hander threw a 3-hitter, 8 strikeouts game to blank the African team.

Canada 7-0 Denmark
First baseman Stephen Mullaley homered twice and produced 4 runs to guide Canada to its first win of the tournament, 7-0, over Denmark in five episodes. Mullaley’s second homer was a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Sean Cleary and Scott Lieph combined for a 3-hit, 9-strikeout shutout. Cleary worked the first four innings, while Lieph pitched the fifth.
Cuba 11-2 Philippines
Reinier Vera and Yurisamdre Ramos homered today in Cuba’s first victory in the Men’s Softball World Championship over the Philippines, 11-2, in five innings. The Caribbean team exploded in the fourth inning with 7 runs to secure the game.
The winner of the game was Alberto Hernandez, who fanned 3 and surrendered 5 hits and 2 runs in four innings of work. Barredo was charged with the loss, he threw 2 innings and allowed 3 hits and 3 runs.

Australia 10-0 Singapore
Two-way veteran Andrew Kirkpatrick homered and tripled in his only two at-bats of the game to lead Australia in today’s 5-inning victory over Singapore, 10-0. The game ended with a walk-off 3-run homer by Jett Wright.
Last year’s U-19 Men’s Softball World Champion pitcher Layton Reid took the ball to start the game for Australia, and allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk in 3 innings pitched, with 7 strikeouts. Harrison Peters allowed 1 hit and fanned 2 in the fourth inning.
Argentina 8-0 Botswana
Juan Potolicchio was dominant from the circle, and Argentina’s base runners stolen a total of 8 bases en route to a five-inning, 8-0 victory against Botswana today, at Hippos Arena in Havlickuv Brod. The powerful right handed pitcher allowed only 1 hit and 2 walks, with 5 strikeouts.
The South American team Argentina took advantage of two errors to score in the first inning, after two quick outs. This set the tone of the game since the South Americans scored in each of the first four innings of play. The loss was charged to Kagiso Mogale, who surrendered 5 runs (3 earned), on 2 walks and 4 Ks.
