Black Mountain, NH, Plans for Another Weekend of May Skiing
The end may be near, but Black Mountain, New Hampshire, is still chugging along as one of the only ski areas open for skiing in the Northeast this spring.
“We are getting very close,” the ski area shared in an update on social media. Other nearby resorts planning to offer lift-served skiing this weekend include Killington and Jay Peak, Vermont.
For what may be Black Mountain’s final weekend of skiing this season, the ski area plans to be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Saturday is Bathing Suit Day—it’s time to break out the board shorts and bikinis, probably—while Black Mountain is celebrating Mother’s Day on Sunday with a brunch event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Final outing or not, Black Mountain is already in historic territory, having notched its longest season in 91 years. Like just a few other mountains in the US, it helped make that happen through an unconventional move: using its snowmaking system in April.
The late-season push follows a whirlwind of change for Black Mountain. It was swooped up only a few years ago by the Indy Pass and its parent company, Entabeni Systems, which makes tech for independent ski areas.
The companies aimed to save Black Mountain from closure and pivot it to a cooperative model. But this year, they changed course, announcing that they’d hang on to Black Mountain, refitting it as a place for Entabeni Systems to test its tech. The move billed Black Mountain as an “independent mountain laboratory.” Both Entabeni Systems and the Indy Pass were set to relocate to the town Black Mountain calls home, Jackson.
Along the way, Black Mountain’s drawn more attention than a ski area of its size usually would. Part of that stems from its newly extended seasons. In lasting this long, the ski area’s beaten out almost every major western destination this year.
Still, a few, like Mammoth Mountain, California, and Arapahoe Basin, Colorado, have some dates left on the calendar.
