NYSP investigate officer-involved shooting in Cohoes
COHOES, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A large police presence was established in Cohoes on Wednesday morning. New York State Police and the Cohoes Police Department confirmed a fatal incident took place at a home on Remsen Street.
Around 2 a.m. on August 6, the NYSP Special Operations Response Team was called to assist Cohoes Police with a domestic situation involving three people, according to State Police. Law enforcement confirmed that Cohoes officers had been engaged in a standoff since 9:20 p.m. on August 5 with 30-year-old Eli Cid Jr., who was believed to have a firearm.
During the operation, Response Team members entered the home at about 7:40 a.m. after crisis negotiators tried to deescalate the encounter with Cid. Upon entering, Cid allegedly fired an unregistered "ghost" gun multiple time at agents, striking a ballistic shield being utilized.
State Police said that agents returned fire before exiting the residence. Crisis negotiators were able to make contact after the exchange of gunfire, but a single gun shot was heard from the building around 8:12 a.m. on Wednesday, about 11 hours after the altercation had begun.
Agents reentering the home found Cid dead from what detectives believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to State Police, the two other people involved in the initial domestic dispute on Tuesday night were unharmed.
According to officials, no law enforcement members were injured in the incident. State Police said there is no threat to the public, and confirmed that the State Attorney General's office has been informed of the situation. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
