Man arrested for Scissortail Park shooting that left 14-year-old injured, post-Thunder Finals win
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A 20-year-old man was arrested for shooting a 14-year-old boy at Scissortail Park during the night of the Thunder's Game 7 win of the NBA Finals.
According to the Oklahoma City Police Department, on Sunday, June 22, at around 10:35 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at Scissortail Park, where the teenager was found and then transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
Officers told News 4 at the time that a fight broke out between two men, where one of them pulled out a gun and shot at the other one.
They said the incident was not related to anything involving game celebrations and was from an altercation in the park, where the suspect fled the area.
Two days later, on Tuesday, June 24, an Oklahoma City Police officer performed a traffic stop just before 11 p.m. near Oklahoma City Boulevard and Thunder Drive, where the driver, identified as 20-year-old Kaziya Penn, was carrying a gun on him. He was then arrested for unlawfully carrying a firearm, according to officials.
The firearm was later test-fired and entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, where it was confirmed as the weapon used in the shooting at Scissortail Park.
Following an investigation, Penn was arrested on Monday, August 4, and was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
Authorities said he also confessed to the Scissortail Park shooting.
