Schenectady man pleads guilty in fatal shooting of Shaker High student
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany County District Attorney's Office announced that Sincere Cancer of Schenectady confessed to his role in the 2021 death of 15-year-old Shaker High School student Destiny Greene. Cancer, 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder before Judge Andra Ackerman in Albany County Court on Wednesday.
As part of his plea, Cancer admitted that around 9:05 p.m. on May 24, 2021, he and his friend Brandon Rivera fired several bullets into a car Greene was in on Wilbur Street in Albany during a planned robbery. Greene was hit by the gunfire and later died from her injuries at Albany Memorial Hospital.
After Wednesday's proceedings, Cancer addressed family members of the victim while being led out of court by Albany County Sheriff's deputies, telling them "I'm sorry for your loss." He's scheduled to be sentenced on June 18 and is expected to receive a sentence of 25 years in prison followed by five years of probation in accordance with his guilty plea.
Rivera was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for second-degree attempted murder in January 2023. Assistant District Attorney Stephen Lydon prosecuted the case.
