LeBron James and Anthony Davis have a few shooters to distribute to this upcoming season

Last season, a big issue with the Lakers was that they didn’t have enough shooters on the team. They finished 2nd to last in the NBA in 3-point shooting. Now, the Lakers have signed a bunch of shooters to surround LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and will probably do a lot better in that ranking, and overall.

The Los Angeles Lakers shot below or equal to 33% from three-point range 40 times last season, and were second-to-last in the NBA in 3-point shooting. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis vaulting the team towards title contention, they had to make sure those shooting woes wouldn’t be repeated this upcoming season.

A few days ago, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports announced that LeBron James was going to be the Lakers starting point guard. Frank Vogel then said in an interview on ESPN that he still doesn’t have any plans with the rotations, but still, I think it’s fair to say there’s a good chance that LeBron as the point guard — at least in function — will happen with their current roster. LeBron has always been a point guard in some ways anyway, he’s just never been explicitly classified as a guard.

As my Silver Screen and Roll co-worker Alex Regla pointed out, in the 2017-18 season, LeBron James had 344 assists on 3-pointers, which was first in the NBA, while Anthony Davis had 75 assists which was 13th in the league. The idea of signing shooters to surround those two superstars is a pretty good idea.

After Kawhi Leonard decided to sign with the Clippers, the Lakers had a ton of cap space to use on free agents. They signed five specific players that have been known to shoot threes pretty well: Danny Green, Quinn Cook, Troy Daniels, Jared Dudley, and Avery Bradley. Here’s how they’ll probably help this year’s offense look a lot better than last season’s:

Last season, the Lakers’ top three shooters were Alex Caruso (48.0%), Lance Stephenson (37.1%), and Mike Muscala (36.8). Danny Green (45.5%), Quinn Cook (40.5%), and Troy Daniels (38.1%) would’ve all been 2nd, 3rd, and 4th on that list.

Rotations with this team is going to be tough to figure out, so thankfully that’s not my job, but it’s a job that Frank Vogel will have to deal with and find lineups that work together. The easy part will be finding rotations that involve shooters on the floor, as that was a difficult task for Luke Walton and his staff last season. With the players that the Lakers signed this summer, I’m confident it won’t be as difficult for Vogel and Co.

If there’s one other thing i’m certain of, it’s that the Lakers won’t be 2nd to last in the NBA in 3-point shooting again...*knock on wood*
