Chris Bateman won the Royal Cork Yacht Club’s Crosshaven House PY1000 dinghy race on the Owenabue River after dinghy racing on Cork Harbour was curtailed.

The ILCA 6 sailor took overall victory in the single mixed dinghy pursuit race, sailed in sheltered conditions after the second day of the 420 Munster Championships was cancelled on Curlane Bank.

Race officer John Crotty set an up-and-down course off the clubhouse. The race lasted around an hour and a half for the slowest boats and approximately one hour for the fastest.

Using the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick system, boats started from slowest to fastest, with the first to finish declared the winner.

Bateman came through the fleet to secure the win on the water, finishing ahead of fellow ILCA 6 sailor Conor Lynch.

The National 18 team of Dave Kenefick, Richy Harrington and Cian Burn completed the podium in third place after a strong charge through the fleet.

Sophie Crosbie took the prize for first lady. Eleven-year-old Nicholas Nyhan was also recognised on the day, receiving a prize and a rendition of “Happy Birthday” as racing coincided with his birthday.

Kenefick’s National 18 crew also collected a class prize, underlining the strength of the N18 fleet in the mixed handicap event.

The newly crowned 420 Munster Championship crew were among those who took part, adding further depth to the entry list.

A competitive mixed fleet featured ILCA, National 18, RS Aero, Feva and Fireball classes, with racing held at high tide to maximise river depth.

The €1,000 prize fund awarded €700 to the winner, €200 to second and €100 to third.

Now in its 12th year, the Crosshaven House-sponsored event continues to offer a close, spectator-friendly early-season contest.
