I.S Local Safety Leader Training

Irish Sailing    –  Local Safety Lead Training

As the 2026 season begins, the Royal St. George Yacht Club (RStGYC) is hosting a valuable opportunity for both prospective Local Safety Leaders and existing Race Officials. The Local Safety Leader Course, scheduled for Saturday, March 7th, 2026, is designed to help participants gain essential safety skills and improve their ability to engage in informed and constructive conversations with safety officers.

Led by Philip Scallan (National Safety Lead for Irish Sailing), this course will provide attendees with crucial insights into safety best practices. Race officials will benefit from a deeper understanding of safety protocols, ensuring they are better prepared to collaborate effectively with safety officers during events. Prospective Local Safety Leaders will gain the knowledge needed to take on safety officer roles confidently.

Where & When

The course will take place at RStGYC from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM and costs €40.00. Don’t miss this chance to enhance your communication and safety skills – book your place today by clicking

The Irish Sailing Safety Leader course (often referred to as the Local Safety Lead) is a shore-based training programme designed for individuals taking on safety management roles at club and local events both ashore and on the water. It differs from the Safety Boat Certificate, which is a practical powerboating qualification.

Irish Sailing Safety Leader Syllabus

The course focuses on the planning and coordination of safety for water-based events rather than physical rescue skills. The core syllabus includes:

  • Risk Assessment & Planning: Assessing site-specific risks and establishing a comprehensive safety plan for sailing events.
  • Coordination & Liaison: Techniques for coordinating on-water team activities and communicating effectively with race officials, event organisers, and emergency services.
  • Safety Best Practices: Insights into current safety protocols to mitigate unnecessary risks during racing.
  • Communication: Improving the ability to have “informed and constructive conversations” between safety officers and race management teams.
  • Role of the Safety Officer: Understanding the specific responsibilities of a club safety officer, including pre-event prep and incident management.

Course Logistics

  • Format: Primarily delivered as a one-day shore-based workshop (typically 09:30 to 16:30).
  • Prerequisites & Eligibility Basics:  Access to this courses requires only basic qualifications, which can be sent to you on request. The primary qualification is a National Powerboat Certificate, a minimum age of 16 and have sea-time experience / having been involved previously in safety and/or race management events.
  • Target Audience: Prospective Safety Leaders and existing Race Officials looking to up-skill.
