Royal Cork Yacht Club 420’s continue to triumph
The Irish 420 class hosted their annual mid term coaching camp hosted again by Lough Derg YC. 28 420's ventured to the shores of Dromineer for 2 days of extensive coaching under the watchful eyes of 5 class coaches.
With the sailors experiencing wind speeds of up to 25 knots over the Saturday, it was great to see all the boats heading out on the water which further emphasises the 420's ability to be sailed in any conditions by any standard of sailor.
After two days of coaching, the class hosted their Munster Championships to round off their season of regional and national events.
With varying conditions, PRO John Corkery managed to get all the boats out early and set for 4 races. Conditions were challenging with strong cold winds but the sailors were battled their way around the course before returning to shore.
Tuesday offered similar conditions with good breeze forecast and 2 races left to complete of the series.
The Royal Cork YC had 6 sailors at both the event and coaching with Charlie Spillane and Ryan O'Connel competing in their first event after they made the transition to the 420 during the summer. Royal Cork YC sailors featured in the top 3 with Cora McNaughton (BLSC) and Matt Mapplebeck (RCYC) finishing in 1st and Daniel Copithorne (RCYC) and Sean Cronin (MYC) finishing in 2nd.
