Sandpipers Set for 50th Championship of Champions

US Sailing’s storied Championship of Champions will celebrate its 50th edition this fall, with racing set for New Bedford Yacht Club (NBYC) in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The milestone event will bring together national, North American, and world champions from across the United States for a regatta that highlights both skill and community spirit.

First held in 1976, the invitational has grown into one of the sport’s most distinctive championships, known for pitting top sailors from a wide range of one design classes against each other in identical boats. For 2025, competitors will race the Sandpiper, a gaff-rigged catboat built by Marshall Marine.

“Over the last few years, our local Sandpiper fleet has been growing in popularity,” said Geoff Marshall, NBYC member and event chair. “Our Sailing Director, Bri Grenier, suggested that the Sandpiper and Buzzards Bay would make a great combination for this event. We’re proud to showcase our club facilities, staff, and dedicated volunteers to sailors from across the country.”

Known for its challenging sea breezes and waves, Buzzards Bay offers a demanding racecourse that will test even the most accomplished sailors. Marshall noted that while many competitors may not have experience in the traditional catboat, they will discover the Sandpiper is more responsive and lively than its classic looks suggest.

The Championship of Champions is distinctive not just for its format but also for the teamwork that supports it. Sandpipers for the event will be supplied through a mix of volunteer owners, Marshall Marine, and Pleasant Bay Community Boating, whose members will also provide on-the-water support and operations.

“This is one of the most meaningful championships US Sailing runs,” said Shannon Bush, who has chaired the event committee for more than 25 years. “It usually is an impressive list of competitors, a veritable who’s who of one design racing. Despite the luminaries, the event is generally low key, with an emphasis on great competition and fun.”

From its grassroots support to its elite roster, the 50th edition of the Championship of Champions embodies the spirit of the sailing community. As Marshall summed up: “This is a chance to celebrate champions and showcase everything our sailing community has to offer.”
