Gary Jobson Adds Two Emmy Awards to His Distinguished Career
Cruising World Editor-at-Large Gary Jobson has been honored with two Emmy Awards for his commentary during the Paris 2024 Olympic sailing events. The first award, Outstanding Live Special – Championship Event Analyst, recognizes his on-air insight during real-time broadcasts. The second, Outstanding Interactive Experience – Play‑By‑Play, acknowledges his engaging, viewer-focused narration. These accolades follow earlier wins for his coverage of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2005–06 Volvo Ocean Race, putting Jobson at the forefront of real-time sailing broadcasting.
A decorated sailor and seasoned analyst, Jobson has competed at the highest levels, including serving as tactician for Ted Turner’s 1977 America’s Cup-winning yacht, Courageous. He covered nine America’s Cup events for ESPN and NBC and has been a fixture on Olympic coverage since 1988, with Paris 2024 marking his seventh time in that role.
As a collegiate standout, Jobson was twice named College Sailor of the Year. He later coached at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy before launching a prolific broadcasting career. Beyond competition, he has produced or narrated over 1,200 sailing programs and authored numerous books on the sport.
Jobson’s contributions span philanthropy and leadership roles, including serving as past president of U.S. Sailing, vice-president of World Sailing, and national chairman of the Leukemia Cup Regatta series, which has raised over $60 million. He was inducted into both the America’s Cup Hall of Fame (2003) and the National Sailing Hall of Fame (2011).
With the latest Emmys, Jobson’s tally now includes at least four awards—from Seoul (1988) to Paris (2024)—highlighting his longevity and excellence in sailing media coverage. His ability to deliver insightful, educational, and emotionally resonant commentary continues to shape how televised sailing is experienced by audiences worldwide.
