Ferrari—the legendary Italian marque best known for Formula 1 dominance and exotic road cars—is turning its engineering expertise seaward. The company has announced that it is developing a 30-meter offshore monohull sailboat, dubbed Hypersail, in collaboration with acclaimed naval architect Guillaume Verdier and veteran ocean racer Giovanni Soldini.

Slated for launch in 2026, the new vessel represents Ferrari’s formal entry into offshore sailing, and the team is positioning Hypersail as a “platform for research and development.” According to the project team, lessons learned from the yacht’s design and systems may influence future automotive innovations.

What sets Hypersail apart isn’t just its performance pedigree. In a bold move, the yacht will be entirely engine-free, relying on energy recovered while under sail to power onboard systems. Solar, wind, and hydrokinetic sources will support electronic controls for the keel, foils, rudder, and instruments. It’s a vision of zero-emissions sailing taken to the competitive level.

The hull and foiling system are being engineered to optimize lift, stability, and endurance. Reports indicate the yacht will ride on three points of contact: a rudder foil, a canting keel with integrated foil, and one of two retractable side foils. The boat’s flight dynamics are expected to mimic some aspects of Ferrari’s Hypercar racing technology—where aerodynamic and systems integration is everything.

Soldini, who previously helmed high-profile IMOCA and MOD 70 programs, calls the project “revolutionary,” citing the blend of sailing know-how and automotive precision. So far, the initiative has generated nine patent filings, with more on the way—an indication that Hypersail is as much about innovation as it is about competition.

Whether Ferrari plans to enter the yacht in official offshore races remains to be seen, but the project underscores a growing crossover between high-performance sailing and next-generation energy systems. For fans of both sailing and supercars, Hypersail could mark the beginning of a fascinating new chapter in offshore yacht design.
