Amsterdam, Netherlands – Four international maritime organizations have joined forces to launch the Global Alliance for Maritime Electrification (GAME), a new coalition aimed at fast-tracking clean energy adoption across the global marine industry.

Announced during the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Amsterdam, GAME unites more than 250 member organizations under a single umbrella. The alliance is a collaboration between the International Electric Marine Association (IEMA), the Zero Emission Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs), the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF), and the European Onshore Power Supply Association (EOPSA).

Although headlines often focus on deep-sea shipping and cruise ships, the majority of the world’s fleet consists of small to midsize vessels—such as workboats, ferries, and nearshore commercial craft—that are well suited for electrification. GAME is focusing its efforts on this segment, where zero-emission solutions can be rapidly deployed at scale.

“We see tremendous potential to fast-track zero-emission solutions for the world’s workboats, ferries, and passenger vessels,” said Adria Jover, President of IEMA. “By aligning our strategies, GAME members will amplify each other’s voices, reduce redundancy, and better serve this industry transition.”

The coalition’s mission is built around three key areas: aligning international stakeholders under a unified message at industry events and forums; working collaboratively on research and development by sharing technical roadmaps and standards while identifying funding opportunities; and engaging with regulators such as the IMO, ISO, and national governments to harmonize policy and promote investor confidence.

“There is no room for risk. Electrification is key: zero GHGs, zero pollution, zero harm to planet,” said Madadh MacLaine, Secretary-General of ZESTAs.

“Batteries are key enablers of zero-emission transport, but they must work in concert with other clean technologies,” added Syb ten Cate Hoedemaker, Managing Director of the Maritime Battery Forum.

Early efforts will include publishing joint position papers and coordinating outreach in strategic regions, including North America, Europe, India, China, and the South Pacific.

“Electrification of ports and vessels is not a future vision—it is an actionable reality,” said Roland Teixeira, President of EOPSA. “Onshore power supply is one of the most immediate tools in the decarbonization toolbox.”

For sailors, marina operators, and coastal communities increasingly focused on sustainability, the formation of GAME represents a step forward in making clean marine propulsion more accessible and effective. The alliance signals a new era of collaboration—one that prioritizes environmental impact without sacrificing performance or reliability.
