Harry Charlton Discusses Cosmic Year and Hand Of God’s Racing Prospects

0 2

Harry Charlton is no stranger to the thrilling and unpredictable world of horse racing, where every decision could be the key to victory or defeat. As the caretaker of two promising steeds, Cosmic Year and Hand Of God, he is meticulously strategizing their racing paths. Both horses have shown great potential, and Charlton is carefully nurturing their talents.

Cosmic Year: A Rising Star

With two career starts and two victories under his belt, Cosmic Year is the talk of the town—a shining prospect for Charlton. The young colt is expected to face tougher competition as he climbs the ranks, and Charlton is determined to manage this step up in class with precision. Despite the challenges ahead, Charlton remains undaunted by the thought of entering Cosmic Year into the season’s first Classic, should the need arise from Juddmonte, his owners.

On the Nick Luck Daily podcast, Charlton candidly discussed the rationale behind this decision. He mentioned, “We left him in the 2000 Guineas on the basis that if something happened to one of their other horses, that we might be required. But for now, I think we can stick with the plan that we’re heading to run on Friday.” His approach is both cautious and adaptable, embodying the art of preparing a winner without rushing its natural development.

The ever-changing British weather is a significant factor in this decision. Charlton explained his preference for softer ground, but noted a recent workout on firm ground had eased his concerns. He artfully described the challenges posed by the quick ground this week, recognizing the tricky task faced by the Clerk of the Course. By Friday, Charlton hopes the ground will be fair and ready, suitable for Cosmic Year to showcase his prowess.

Navigating Challenges

Charlton isn’t opposed to testing Cosmic Year on faster tracks in the future, clearing up misconceptions about the colt’s need for cut in the ground. He recalled their cautious approach when Cosmic Year was a two-year-old, avoiding fast ground races to protect his well-being. However, a recent workout on good to firm ground showcased Cosmic Year’s adaptability and competitive spirit.

Reflecting on this session, Charlton claimed, “He worked very well and it made us more comfortable with the concept. We did let him do a little bit more on Friday and everyone was quite excited.” Such reassurances have strengthened Charlton’s resolve, making him open to running in the Guineas if circumstances necessitate it.

Hand Of God: A Character in the Making

Alongside Cosmic Year, Charlton manages another promising runner—Hand Of God. Prepared to make his return this Saturday, Hand Of God is scheduled to run in the Betfred Sussex Stakes, adding to his impressive record of three wins from five career starts. Having last triumphed in the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot, Hand Of God has been off the track but is back and prepared to make waves.

In the interim, Hand Of God has been gelded, a decision Charlton believes will unlock further potential in the four-year-old. “We’re excited about him,” Charlton shared, convinced that his character and mindset will shine through on the racetrack.

A Promising Start

For Charlton, the race on Saturday represents more than just another day at the races. It’s the culmination of months of strategic planning and adaptation. “We’ve been aiming at this race for the whole of the winter really,” Charlton confessed, underscoring the importance of Saturday’s event as a catalyst for Hand Of God’s future endeavors. Though the race is a mile one, Charlton recognizes that Hand Of God might excel in longer distances, marking the start of an exciting journey.

In this dynamic world of UK horse racing, where every decision carries weight and every race presents a fresh challenge, Charlton navigates the tracks with a steady hand and a hopeful heart, steering Cosmic Year and Hand Of God towards what promises to be an illustrious future.
