After a mostly upwind first leg of the ILCA season with some cold and windy days behind us, we now move into a fast reach with quite a few events for the summer. Although there are some events overseas for those keen on testing themselves, there are many local events in Ireland and even Cork to keep you busy.
First off is the Masters in Dun Laoghaire on May 24/25th and there are a few ILCA sailors that may not realize that they qualify to be apprentice masters at age thirty.
ILCA 6: 30 to 44 – Apprentice, 45 to 54 – Master, 55 to 64 – Grand Master, 65 to 74 – Great Grand Master, 75 and over – Legend. The divisions for the ILCA 7: 30 to 44 – Apprentice, 45 to 54 – Master, 55 to 64 – Grand Master, 65 and over – Great Grand Master.
It is a great fun event and as Sean Craig showed by winning the Munster Championship against some young guns, there are always opportunities to hit the podium. We have a couple of grand masters sailing with Royal Cork and Phillip Doherty is expected to test his stamina at this masters event.
After all the exams are over, its time to get that trailer ready and get on the road a little. The summer sprint series starts up again on June 21st in Glandore. This is a fantastic prep for the Western championships in Killaloe on June 28th/29th. Then soon after on July 6th It is Kinsale for another sprint. These events consist of five 20-25 min races and allows sailors to travel, compete against sailors from other clubs in a fun setting. A new sprint at Cove SC follows on July 20th before the Leinster championships at the National YC in Dun Laoighaire on July 26/27th.
The August bank holiday weekend has a sprint in Bantry on the 3rd and then the ILCA nationals are at the other end of the country on August 15-17th.
ILCA 7 U-21 worlds is also local this year at Dun Laoghaire from August 22-29th. The At homes will feature the passage race again on Saturday 23rd followed by some club racing on Sunday 24th.
All of these events building up to busy September with another sprint in Inniscarra on Sept 7th, followed by the finale of the sprint series in Royal Cork on September 14th.
Then on Sept 27/28th, the End of Season event is looking to be a significant event this year as it is the final qualifier for the ILCA 6 Youth Worlds. It also looks like we may have some ILCA 7 Olympic stars keen to take on some of our local heros.
Plan your holidays and keep on sailing. Club Racing will run all summer long on Weds evenings and coaching on Saturdays with some step up camps for new ILCA sailors. IF you are not busy enough, there is also a sprint series in Dun Laoghaire.
