0 2

In the thrilling world of international horse racing, all eyes are set on the $20 million Saudi Cup, slated for February 22nd in Riyadh. The anticipation is building as the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia has listed eleven probable starters for this grand spectacle, capturing the attention of racing enthusiasts around the globe.

Leading the charge is the formidable Forever Young, currently the favorite in international futures betting. This promising runner was showing at 2-1 odds with most bookmakers in the UK, according to Oddschecker. Forever Young, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, is known for his exceptional performances and will undoubtedly be a formidable contender in this prestigious event.

Not far behind in the competition are Romantic Warrior and Laurel River, both poised to make significant marks in the race. Romantic Warrior, a three-time winner of the Hong Kong Cup (G1), will be guided by his long-time jockey James McDonald. This will be his first foray on dirt tracks, presenting a new challenge for his connections. Romantic Warrior is trained by Danny Shum, who is known for preparing his athletes with a keen eye for detail.

Meanwhile, Laurel River, trained by Bhupat Seemar, enters the Saudi Cup following a victory in the Dubai World Cup (G1) the previous year. With a stellar track record, this runner is expected to be a tough competitor.

The lineup also features a robust representation from the United States, including Rattle N Roll and Locked. Rattle N Roll, trained by Kenny McPeek, secured his place by winning a domestic qualifier, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (G3). Locked, another formidable contender from the US, comes into this race after placing second in the Pegasus World Cup, under the tutelage of esteemed trainer Todd Pletcher.

Japan’s strong showing is further emphasized by runners from Noboru Takagi’s stable. Ushba Tesoro, last year’s runner-up in the Saudi Cup, and Wilson Tesoro will both present a challenge to the field. In addition, Ramjet, trained by Shozo Sasaki, is also set to take the stage, adding depth to Japan’s representation.

The global presence is enriched by France’s entry, Facteur Cheval, who finished third in the Al Maktoum Challenge (G1) at Meydan. Trained by Jérôme Reynier, this seasoned competitor is expected to bring its unique racing flair to the event.

Locally, the Argentine-bred El Kodigo, under the guidance of trainer Abdulaziz Mashref, is leading the charge. This marks a significant moment for the local racing scene, offering a chance to showcase homegrown talent on an international stage.

However, despite the thrilling lineup, there are notable absences this year. White Abarrio, although listed initially, has been ruled out of the race due to recent developments. Similarly, Sierra Leone, once the international futures favorite, has withdrawn due to a leg abscess, as revealed by trainer Chad Brown. These developments add a layer of unpredictability to an already exciting lineup.

With a gathering of such prestigious equine talent, the 2023 Saudi Cup promises to be an exhilarating showcase of international racing at its finest. The diverse field, representing various training methodologies and racing traditions, will not only vie for the substantial prize but also for the honor of being crowned the king of the dirt track in Riyadh.
