Starcross Prizes - by: crispin Taylor
The club is indebted to Dick Garry for his management and oversight of prizes and awards for many years and acknowledges the considerable amount of effort that he has contributed to the efficient running of this aspect of club management. In reviewing recent prize giving events, Dick has noted that take up at prize giving and general interest in prizes, especially series prizes has reduced in recent years. In addition, there are a number of prizes that have not been awarded for many years and some that have gone AWOL.Simon Greenslade and Dick are meeting to review and catalogue prizes into a format that can be stored on the club drive and also looking into whether a display cabinet at the club house would be a viable option. To consider why prize uptake has diminished, I have asked fleet captains & club officers to seek comments from sailors to feedback at the next sailing committee as to why this might be, and importantly, what ideas and thoughts sailors in your fleets may have about re-energising club awards/prizes for the benefit of sailors and the club. This post therefore is to ask you, as members for your thoughts, as this might be a good opportunity to think differently by encouraging prizes for female helms/crew, mixed teams, juniors, older boats, buddies, best results at national events etc; all ideas welcome!
