Royal Cork YC Annual Naval Race

0 7

The Royal Cork Yacht Club held its annual Naval Race last Saturday in moderate north easterlies in Cork Harbour, bringing together a fleet of 21 boats, racing under IHS, IRC and ECHO handicaps.

The race started on ‘Grassy’ with the Cage buoy as the line’s pin end, followed by a course to Dosco mark S, W2 P, Harp P, No 10S, EF2P, No 13P, and a finish at no 15 at the Naval Base. Thanks to our Race Officer, Michael McCann, for a fantastic race.

This year, in conjunction with your Keelboat Committee, Commander Brian Matthews and Capt. Willie Roberts of the Irish Naval Service, we were delighted to introduce a new, second perpetual trophy to be awarded to the 1st White Sail yacht.

In the biggest division under IHS, Conor Hanlon’s Sun Odyssey 34.2, “Lapwing” won from Philip Myers & Paul Horgan’s Ronautica RO340, “Freedom”. Third in the 15-boat fleet was Frank Caul and John Molloy’s Grand Soliel 37B “Prince of Tides”.

Ronan and John Downing’s Half tonner “Miss Whiplash” won a six-boat Spinnaker IRC division, taking the Spinnaker Perpetual trophy from Annamarie with Denis Murphy’s Grand Soleil 40 “Nieulargo” who finished in 2nd place. Third was Ian Hickey’s Granada 38, “Cavatina”. Under ECHO, “Cavatina” won from “Miss Whiplash”, with “Nieulargo” third.

In the 12-boat WS IRC Fleet, Kieran O’Brien & Fiorentina Stanciu’s MG335 “Magnet” won the new perpetual trophy with the McGrath family’s Dehler 34 “Big Mc” finishing 2nd. Third was Ronan Twomey’s First 40.7 “Rosmarina”.

The Naval race is one of our club’s great traditions, and we were delighted to be back at the Naval Base for this year’s race and we thank the Naval service for their hospitality.

We were delighted to welcome the Secretary General of the Dept. Of Defense Jackie Mc Crum to Saturday’s race who competed aboard “Nieulargo”.

Thanks to the Flag Officer, Commanding the Naval Service, for supporting this annual event, who was represented by Capt. Willie Roberts. Thanks also to the Naval Service yacht Squadron for organizing the event and Commander Brian Matthews for his support over the past few weeks.
