Royal Cork Keelboat Summer Series Conclusion

0 13

Last weekend was a very busy few days for Keelboat racing at the Royal Cork. The summer series concluded with the final races of the August/September league on Thursday and Friday and the CSC Blackrock race was held on Saturday.

On Thursday night it was all to play for in the overall league in IRC and Echo Spinnaker, but Ria Lyden came out on top on “Ellida” with Derry Good’s “Summer Light” taking 2nd place in both.

In the White Sail division, Ian Hickey and his crew were dominant in IRC, winning the overall league with Sean Hanley’s “Luas” finishing in second place. Ian Hickey was back on the podium in White sail Echo by finishing in second place but Paul O’Shea’s Jeanneau 36, “Elegance” won the league.

On Friday night it really was all to play for with just 1 point separating the top three boats coming into the final race, Ronan Twomey’s “Rosmarina”, the Foster family’s “Clodagh” and Paul O’Shea’s “Elegance”. On the night though, Caoimhe and Cillian Foster won the league on “Clodagh” with “Rosmarina” finishing 2nd and “Elegance” 3rd. Congrats also to Brendan Egan and family aboard their classic, “Boekanier” who won the race on Friday night.

We will hold the prizegiving for this league at the Laying Up supper – more details to follow.

Congratulations and well done to all our skippers and crew, our RO’s and their teams, Sean and Mike for all the work they do behind the scenes, and of course to Ann, Amy and all the staff for their support throughout the summer. We had a fantastic summer series, overall, we had 19 races every Thursday and Friday and one of the best turnouts for years,. There is still a lot more sailing to be had, with the Naval race this Saturday, the training day this Sunday (don’t forget to sign up), the Autumn series will start on Sunday the 29th of September and run for five weeks and we’ll see the year out with the Winter league.

Last Saturday CSC held their annual Cobh to Blackrock race. Once again, the RCYC came up trumps in a very breezy day. In class 1 the Murphy family took gold by winning Class 1 IRC and Echo. Class 2 IRC and Echo was won by Mike McCann in his Etchells, “Don’t Dilly Dally” with Ian Hickey in “Cavatina” taking silver in both. Peter O’Leary dominated in Class 3 by winning IRC and Echo. Ronan Twomey and crew showed what they were made of by winning Class 1 in IRC and Echo.

The IRC overall, however, was won by Peter O’Leary, with Mike Mc Cann in second and the Murphys in third overall.

What a fantastic weekend of racing in the harbour! See you all on Saturday for the Naval race.
