Crow’s Nest 08/01/24

This past week was a big one for the CLYC; a group of X boaters were escorted by their parents to Delavan Lake, WI for the ILYA X boat Championships; a loved couple of the CLYC was married in style and the racing fleets finally had a banner sailing weekend!

Ten days… Sunday, August 11th is the official kick off for the ILYA Championships.  The A and MC scows will start showing up at about 8am, the A boats start off the racing Sunday evening with two races planned.  It should be quite the show!  On Wednesday, August 14th the A’s and MC’s are done and in come the C and E fleets! The logistics plan is in place, our “Dry Sailing Managers” will be in contact with the other volunteers to hold meetings and this shindig will go down as the best event in CLYC history! I believe most everyone who is planning to race has done so; if you haven’t, here’s where you need to go… ILYA Championship Registration

Don’t forget the Boater’s Closet; they are the exclusive provider of ILYA Championship Merchandise.  From t-shirts to jackets, hats to bags, they certainly have it all covered. If you want your merchandise delivered to the regatta your order must be placed by Monday, August 5th.  See it all at Boater’s Closet

Four X boaters ventured over to Delavan Lake, WI for the ILYA X Champs.  Plagued by light winds the first two days, it looked as though they may not get any racing in at.  Thankfully though, both the Senior and Junior fleets were able to complete four total races.

Jake Sorensen was kind enough to send me a synopsis of the regatta; since I wasn’t able to be there, it made my life so much easier that he did it! Thanks Jake so much for doing this for me!

“This was the only regatta for any X boater this year. Jude finished Senior Fleet 31, Griffin Junior Fleet 42, Thea Junior Fleet 43 and Avery 44 Top 5 races look like this 1) Jude 20th, 2) Jude 25th 3) Griffin 32 4) Griffin 33 5) Avery 35

Mark Tesar was the senior PRO and Stu Oltrogge set the windward mark and finish line for the juniors. Very light wind throughout, although the juniors had decent wind in the big part on the final day. Mark Tesar and the judges sent the kids out on a whim Thursday night after no racing all day, based on a report from Geneva that the sea breeze had built and wind was coming. We all thought he was nuts and it turned out to be true!! Grayson crewed for Griffin, Will Price for Jude, Isla for Thea and Avery had two crews Claire Rasmussen and Brynn
Tidrick. This was Thea and Griffin’s first time skippering at an ILYA
Championship. The kids really enjoyed their time at the Lake Lawn, taking over the pool with fellow sailors from all over the ILYA.”

The future looks promising for our young sailors; with more time and coaching these kids could be serious contenders in the future.

A huge congratulations to Wil and Abbey Cooney; the couple was married Saturday on what couldn’t have been a more perfect day!  Cheers to your future together!

Finally!!!! WIND!!! Nothing too crazy; a weekend of 12-15 mph breezes, absolutely perfect conditions for racing! Sure, it was a bit shifty, but that’s mid-summer breezes from any direction. I must admit I failed last weekend… I didn’t pay as much attention to the other fleets as I usually do. Since you don’t want to hear about just one fleet, I’ll go ahead and skip a full recap this week. The first three races of the weekend were counted as the Jack MacNider Regatta; here’s the results:

I was talking with someone over the weekend, I can’t remember who it was (old age is kicking in), about starting and finishing with guns and getting the shell when you won races. Since we don’t have shotguns or cannons anymore, how about a shout out for this past weekend’s race winners:

C – Merritt Becker, Marcus Lundberg, Steve Swift

E – Emily Haugerud (2)

Melges 15 – Dave Atkinson (3), Will Finstad

MC – Dan Allen, Stu Oltrogge (2), Todd Tesar

X – Sophia Allbee (2)

This weekend has a full schedule of racing slated.  The MC, M15 and X boats will all race at their normal times.  E and C fleets, you’re scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 2pm. Fingers crossed a full slate is completed.

While I have your attention E and C boaters, you also have racing Saturday, August 10th at 2pm… This is not on the original schedule or in the yearbook; this is a late addition due to your lack of racing this year.

Since I’m giving early notices; the Russ Schurtz Memorial Dad/Mom/Lad/Lass Race has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 10th @ 9:30.  The MC, M15 and regular X boat races will not be held as already noted in the yearbook.

Ryan and Jenny Amble have an X boat For Sale:  1999 Melges X Boat, complete with Melges trailer, full deck cover, envelope cover, 2 whisker poles, floatation panel .  All rigging updated in 2019.  2024 Main and Jib (Quantum, new/unused), 2022 Main and Jib (NS), 2015 Main and Jib (NS), 2009 Main (NS), 2008 Jib (NS). $7,000. Hey folks, one last thing.  Camp Tanglefoot is in need of 4-5 dock sections for the marsh area on the grounds.  Maybe you have some sections sitting around and would like to “gift” them to the Camp…?  Please get in touch with Nancy Barnes – barnes8018@yahoo.com

Until the next time folks…

Stay in the Clear Air,
