Superb finish to the Cork Harbour Combined League

0 7

The Cork Harbour Combined League concluded last Friday. The league was a tremendous success with an average of 25 boats racing every week!. On Friday we had a light westerly breeze in not very summery conditions. On the night the Spinnaker class was once again dominated by the Jones family’s J122, “Jellybaby” who won IRC and ECHO. In the White Sail class Ronan Twomey’s “Rosmarina” won Echo and the McGrath’s brought home IRC.

The overall prizegiving for the league was also held on Friday night, after racing in the Quays bar in Cobh. Ian Scandrett from CSC won the overall in Spin Echo and IRC aboard “White Knight”. The RCYC’s “Jellybaby” and “Nieulargo” came 2nd and 3rd respectively in both IRC and ECHO.

In White Sail, the McGrath family did the double by winning ECHO and IRC with “Scribbler II” and “Phaeton” coming 2nd and 3rd respectively in both also.

Well done to all the skippers and crew for making this a great success. It’s fantastic to see the harbour clubs coming together to the benefit of all our sailors. Thanks to our RO’s for the league, Peter Crowley, Dominic Losty and Niall Hawes from the RCYC and CSC for four great races, to Mike and Sean for doing the results and to the event sponsor, Johanna Murphy and sons, Estate Agents.

On the domestic front, Thursday night gave us a fresh Westerly, gusting 25knots to put our 12 skippers and crew through their paces. In the IRC SPIN division, Denis Byrnes “Cracker” came 1st with Sean Hanleys HB31 “Luas” winning ECHO. In White Sail, Ian Hickeys “Cavatina” was again dominant, winning in ECHO and IRC.

The Friday night IHS league continued with 16 boats out racing. The McGrath family came home in 3rd place on “Big Mc”, Sean Hanley’s “Luas” 2nd and the night belonged to Conor Hanlon on his Jeanneau 34, “Lapwing”.

Last Saturday saw our Midsummer Madness “Round the Island” race won by Ronan Downing on “Miss Whiplash” Ronan was presented with the perpetual plate on Thursday! Congrats Ronan!.

Thanks to all our skippers, crew, RO’s, Results and of course, Anne, Amy and their teams!

We have 2 more Thursdays and Fridays of the June/July league before we take a break for Volvo Cork Week. See you on the water this week!.
