Royal Cork 420 Sailors head to Europeans in Slovenia
This week saw the departure of the international 420 national class trailer skippered by the intrepid John Corkery on its 1800km each way trip to Potoroz, Slovenia. Safe passage John!

The Irish team for the 2024 Europeans are well represented by RCYC sailors with Isha Duggan and Tommy Hiras in the senior fleet and Caoimhe Corkery (RCYC/KYC) and Lucy Moynan representing their country in the junior event, with Irish team sailors representing clubs from Malahide, Blessington, Wexford, Dunmore East as well as Royal Cork and Kinsale YC. The sailors qualified for the team following a transparent selection process.

The class have had a busy run up to the international event with an open training weekend with international coach Riccardo del Felice in the Royal Cork two weeks ago followed by five days in Galway at a three day national training camp and the Connacht regional championship last weekend. Two glorious days of close competitive racing saw two points separating the top four boats at the end of day one with an additional two boats, Isabelle Passberger and Sarah Clooney (WHSC) and Caoimhe Corkery (RCYC/KYC) and Lucy Moynan (RCYC) making a strong showing on day two. The results featured a strong RCYC showing with Isha and Tommy finishing second overall and Daniel Copthorne (SCC) and Matt Mapplebeck (RCYC) winning the Silver Fleet and the coveted immediate promotion spot into Gold Fleet.
Also on its travels is the Chuckawalla Challenge perpetual trophy in memory of Ted Crosbie which after spending a bit of last weekend at the bar of GBSC, is now cruising in Dunmore East for a spell before heading inland to Lough Ree in July for the 420 Leinster championship and the Double Ree, a double handed sailing festival designed to introduce inexperienced sailors to their first regional event.
The Chuckawalla trophy will be back in the club in time for the 420/Fireball/29er Nationals in mid August. Ted’s family presented the trophy to the International 420 class to help encourage youth sailors to successfully transition from single to multi-handed sailing. The Association have devised a league to recognise the most improved pair across the entire class (both gold and silver fleets) in regional and national events and it will be presented to the winning pair after the final event of the 2024 International 420 season which is planned for late October, venue to be confirmed.
