October – November: Migratory Bird Festival.
There won’t be an in-person fine feathered festival this fall, but Les Fruits de Mer will host a virtual event. “There will be a specific migratory bird focus during these two months, which is when these birds are arriving in and passing through the Caribbean. During this time there will be migratory bird activities posted at least a few times a week at www.lesfruitsdemer.com/category/athome/,” says Mark Yokoyama, co-founder and treasurer of the Grand Case, St. Martin-based non-profit association dedicated to promoting awareness of ecology, culture and sport. BirdsCaribbean (www.birdscaribbean.org/category/from-the-nest/) will also host weekly webinars about migratory birds featuring bird researchers and educators from the Caribbean and some live workshops for sketching birds and other fun activities.
October 14 – 17: 53rd Bonaire Regatta.
Aquaspeed Bonaire Windsurfers has been appointed as the event’s new organizer “For 2020, Aquaspeed will solely focus on the sailing competition,” says Derchlien Vrolijk, regatta representative. “Due to the current global events around COVID-19, this year’s regatta will be organized for national participation only. This entails participants from Bonaire, Curacao and Aruba. The organization has strict protocols to follow in keeping a safe environment at all times which will have social distancing in place, use hand sanitizer, wash hands as frequently as possible and avoid creating crowds.” Aquaspeed has organized windsurfing events for 35 years, including Prokids Bonaire for the last 15 years, PWA Bonaire on four occasions and last year the first IFCA Dutch Caribbean Championship-ABC Tour. www.facebook.com/RegattaBonaire/, www.facebook.com/pg/AquaspeedBonaireWindsurfers/
Through October 25: Pure Grenada’s 4th Annual #PureDiveFest.
This year’s fest will be a digital one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers will share professionally produced content 3 to 5 times a week on @grenadapurediving social media platforms. “This year’s digital dive fest started September 19th, to coincide with PADI’s Project AWARE week and ends on October 25th to celebrate Grenada’s Wreck of the Bianca C’s 59th birthday,” says Polly Charles, marketing multimedia consultant for the Grenada Scuba Diving Association. Project AWARE works with divers across the World to protect the underwater environment. October 23-25: BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival.
The postponement flag is down, meaning the countdown is on for the 49th edition of this favorite Caribbean regatta. Previously scheduled for March, the event was put on hold at that time by the BVI Government due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What’s new is the second-year addition of a Sports Multihull class with several Corsair’s expected. “The thing I like best is the fierce competition,” says Mark Sanders, who won this class in 2019 on his Corsair 31, Island Hop. “I like that the class has taken off in this way, with potentially more boats joining the ranks.” There’s also a ‘Fun’ class for cruisers. Racing-equipped bareboats from The Moorings and Sunsail are available for charter by those who don’t have a boat in the BVI. Registration starts Thursday, October 22 at Nanny Cay Resort and Marina, the hosting sponsor of the Spring Regatta for over 15 years. The three-day regatta will include a race Around Tortola for the Nanny Cay Cup; the second Mount Gay Race Day and courses set using BVI islands as challenging nautical marks for long-distance or windward-leeward courses. The Race Committee will design multiple races each day thus creating good courses to fit the day’s weather conditions. The legendary Regatta Village located at the Nanny Cay Beach Bar will be open each night of the regatta with plenty of food, drinks and great music. www.bvispringregatta.org
