Happy 2020 from Woollahra Sailing Club
We had a wonderful year at WSC and we would like to thank all our members for making it special.
From January to December we held local, national and international events targeting a wide variety of ages, skills and backgrounds.
Our beautiful club will be closed from December 20th to January 6th. New Years Eve – Please be aware that the access to the Club, pontoon and wharf will be restricted from 3pm, 31st Dec to 6am, 1st Jan. This is to ensure all boats, equipment and people remain safe.
We would like wish good luck to all members competing in various competitions over the Christmas\New Year period. We look forward to following their progress online.

Tom Slingsby wins World Moth Championships
Woollahra Sailing Club member, Tom Slingsby, finished his year in the best possible way, winning the 2019 World Moth Championships with a day to spare.
The event held at Mounts Bay Sailing Club in WA saw quite a few of our members competing.
After a total of 13 races, Slingsby won the last 12 with the only a second place in the opening qualifying race behind Queenslander, Matt Chew. Tom was very happy with his win saying:
“I just had good speed, I was starting well and I was just trying not to explode the boat, which I’ve done a lot in the past. It feels amazing, the Moth Class I love it. I’ve been doing it since 2010, I’ve got so many good friends in the fleet, I love the development and playing with the boat. I mean I’m a Laser sailor and I’ve come over to this and I find it really enjoyable”.

Sails Ocean Sails – S.O.S
We encourage our members to support S.O.S, a life saving awareness program, donating any old sails (jibs, etc) to help the Tongan community.
“Sails Ocean Sails” has the following objectives:
1.To reduce the number of fishermen lost at sea each year
2.To provide coastal communities around the world with sails
3.To demonstrate to fishermen how to hoist sails in small boats
4.To demonstrate to fishermen basic sailing techniques and methods
6.To discuss compass and map reading, charts and basic navigation

Paddling News
Dear Friends, the Christmas and Silly Season is upon us. My message today is a salient reminder in respect of the ways of paddling.
FIRST: time spent in reconnaissance is never wasted. Check the water and wind conditions before you go out. Know the tides, and don’t cut that corner too tight near a reef. Tether yourself to practicality – use that leg rope and always wear a PFD.
SECOND: Positive Participation. As the Japanese Master Miyamoto Musashi says, When your spirit is not in the least clouded, when the clouds of bewilderment clear away, there is the true void … With your spirit settled, accumulate practice day by day, and hour by hour.
THIRD: Tell a friend. Have a paddling plan and commit that plan to a friend to include your expected hour of return.
Have a wonderful Christmas. Give extensively of yourself and remember our beloved Tom who would have been 67 today. If you are near his tree give him some love, share a coffee with him, and have a chat. When you are out on the water take the time to appreciate just how lucky we are to see the sunrises, to paddle in this most beautiful harbour and Pacific Ocean. Be kind to others around you. And don’t forget every Saturday is the Best Time Trial Ever!

Ramp etiquette tips
Be safety conscious. Booms can swing with wind change. Pedestrians and young children are unaware of the dangers so be very careful when crossing the footpath.
Please do not queue across the pedestrian footpath outside the Club. Move boats forward when washing.
Use the ramp for launch and retrieval only. Not for parking. Not for rigging.
Please DO NOT LEAVE DOLLIES ON THE RAMP. One person leaves a dolly on the ramp then next person follows that example and the next and pretty quickly the ramp is unusable. Store dollies on the grass or on the brick pavers behind the winch. Stack the dollies to minimise the space they consume. Place them out of the way.
