US court hands down first college scandal sentence

0 7

A US court has handed down one of the first sentences in the college admissions scandal. John Vandemoer pleaded guilty to racketeering charges in March, accused of accepting more than $600,000 in bribes in exchange for trying to help students get into Stanford University by claiming they were sailing recruits. The former sailing coach at Stanford will not go to prison, but has received a $10,000 fine and will serve two years of supervised release; the first six months of home confinement with electronic monitoring. More sentencing hearings are to come, with Hollywood stars among over 50 people accused of being part of the racket, involving some of the country’s most prominent universities.
