Cracked rudder

I would like some advice. I am in the process of refurbishing a Sunfish rudder/tiller. After removing the rudder cheek and sanding off the old, weathered varnish I noticed a crack in the rudder that goes through the hole for the pivot point. The crack runs from the edge of the rudder to as far as you can see in the photo.
