Any advice on removing leaf from leaf spring on sunfish trailer?

I have a fairly nice trailer but it's got a double leaf spring and rides quite stiff with just my sunfish aboard. It looks like it would be a simple matter to remove the second, shorter leaf from the spring. I would appreciate any advice for others who may have done this to soften the ride for their 'fish.
