Need help widening a mast for sunfish step

I have two masts for my sunfish that are pictured. The bottom mast is a Sunfish mast that is 115 inches long. The top mast is 122 inches long and it was was advertised as a sunfish mast when I bought it. I've been using the longer mast and in the past I wrapped netting adhesive tape around the bottom of the mast to get a better fitting in the mast step. It worked okay but I really want something more permanent. I tried gluing a plastic strip so the diameter would match a regular mast, but...
