Winch replacement

I am going to be replacing the original winches on my deck over the winter and wanted to ask around about tailing vs non tailing winches. The original winches were self-tailers, but I removed the stripper because my headsail trimmer said they were always in the way. I am in agreement with him. There was an older deck layout version that showed size 35 tailing winches for the primaries. The new deck layout from Harken, as well as most photos I have looked at, show non tailing winches.
