Chine repair 1967 sunfish

I have a 1967 sunfish that had what I thought to be a minor crack on the chine. When we got into it, we discovered that it was an old repair that had broken down and when we got that all removed we have a 3 foot hole that is about 3” at the widest point. What we decided to try is putting some 1/8 inch thick PVC slats inside the hull for support.
