Pontypridd v Brecon – Match Preview

0 22

On Saturday 9th May Pontypridd RFC welcome Brecon RFC to Sardis Road for the team’s final Admiral Premiership match of the current 2025/26 season, kick off is at 2:30pm.

The last time the two sides met was on the opening day of the season, and a strong second half performance saw Ponty take the spoils by 34 points to 17 back on Saturday 6th September at Brecon’s Parc de Pugh ground. The last time the two clubs met at Sardis was in last season’s league campaign on Saturday 16th November 2024, the Valley Commandos enjoyed a 43-11 win that afternoon.

Pontypridd still have lots to play for as they head into tomorrow’s match, a win will keep the team’s faint title hopes alive, and a win or a draw would see them progress into the Mid District Premiership Grand Final at Sardis Road on Wednesday 20th May. Brecon may be down but they are not quite out and under the guidance of Kristian Dacey will want want to finish their two-season stay in the Premiership on a high – game on!

A post-match playing shirt auction, merchandise items for sale and ready for collection plus much more supporter information is in the relevant section below, but first The Team News…

Ponty have made seven changes, four in the backs, three in the forwards and a positional switch to the starting XV that beat Merthyr last Saturday. In addition to that there are also four new faces on the bench, one being a potential debutant.

In the backs Jorge Lucey returns to start at fullback, as does Stuart Floyd-Ellis at outside centre. Lloyd Dennett earns a start at scrum-half and Harry Kinsey comes into the starting line-up and starts on the right wing having made his debut off the bench last week. Logan Jones skippers the team this week from flyhalf.

In the forwards the three changes sees Connah Hughes start at hooker, Lloyd Riley drafted into the second-row and Ben Bora into the openside flanker berth. The positional switch sees Cai James move from openside to blindside flanker.

The four new faces on the bench are Kian Mattravers, Lucca Alexander-White, George Thorrington and Rhys Wyatt. Rhys is a fullback and is the son of Ponty legend Gareth Wyatt. He is on permit from neighbours Llantwit Fardre and has also represented the Scarlets Under 18s this season.

Should Kian Mattravers appear into the action from the bench he will make his 50th appearance for Pontypridd – congratulations Kiki!

Something else we would like to mention is that Lucca Alexander-White, Harry Kinsey, Rhys Wyatt and Alfie John (who has also played for the Club this season) are all former Pontypridd Schools U16s who have all represented Pontypridd RFC this season whilst still playing Youth rugby – all part of our development pathway.
