Bob McKillop to Step Down as Head Coach After 20 Years at Heriot’s Rugby Club
Heriot’s Rugby Club can confirm that Head Coach Bob McKillop will step down from his role at the end of the current season, bringing to a close an outstanding 20-year coaching career with the club.
Bob was first appointed Head Coach in 2006 which culminated in winning the Scottish Cup in 2009. He then stepped away due to family and work commitments prior to returning to the club in 2019.
Bob has served as Head Coach of the 1st XV for the past two seasons, following a highly successful period leading the 2nd XV. During his tenure, he has played a key role in the post-Super6 club rugby landscape, guiding the 1st XV to back-to-back semi-final appearances and reinforcing strong playing and coaching foundations for the future.
Having achieved this period of consolidation and success, Bob feels the time is right for both himself and the club to embrace a new chapter.
Before stepping down after the completion of cup matches, Bob will continue to contribute on the field by leading Heriot’s Sevens programme through the remainder of the season.
Club President Stewart Mustard paid tribute to Bob’s long-standing contribution:
“We’d like to thank Bob for his efforts and contribution to Heriot’s Rugby Club over the last 20 years where he has been a hugely influential figure. We wish Bob every success in the future and he will always be welcome at Goldenacre.”
Reflecting on his time at the club, Bob said:
“I’ve hugely enjoyed my time at Heriot’s and I’m really looking forward to my next challenge – I feel we’ve achieved a lot during my time at the club, not least significant growth in playing numbers, and I’ve made some lifelong friends and have some very good memories – Heriots will always be special to me but I need a change and the club probably do to”
The club will announce its new 1st XV coaching team next week.
