Lynne Cantwell Inducted Into World Rugby Hall Of Fame

0 44

Earlier this week World Rugby announced UL Bohemian, Munster and Irish player Lynne Cantwell as their newest inductee to the Hall of Fame.

Cantwell was raised in a Gaelic Football and soccer stronghold but instead decided to turn her hand to athletics.

It was during her stint studying sports science in the University of Limerick that Lynne found her love of rugby. It turned out to be an inspired decision, as Cantwell became a key player for not only the student side but also the newly formed UL Bohemians.

During her time with UL Bohs, Cantwell also saw her way into the Munster set up playing in a number of interprovincial clashes.

She earned her first Irish cap off the bench against England in 2002 and is now Ireland’s most capped female player making 86 appearances for her country spanning a 13-year period.

During this time, she was integral to Ireland’s historic achievements, including their 2013 Six Nations Grand Slam and the iconic victory over New Zealand at the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup. Since her retirement, Cantwell has been a tireless advocate for the development of women’s rugby globally.

More recently she was appointed High-Performance Manager for South African women’s rugby. With this role she drove the expansion of the Springbok Women’s playing schedule as well as introducing an Under-20 team and starting the process to create a professionalised women’s league. This was a huge benefit to the squad as they’d go on to qualify for their first ever Rugby World Cup quarter final earlier this month.

Cantwell made the move back to Ireland in 2024 and was named Head of Women’s Strategy for Irish Rugby.

The utility-back will be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame during a special ceremony on 26 September at the Women’s Summit, held in London on the eve of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 final.
